Community Empowerment for WASH in Amuria (CEWA)

The project is  being implemented in Amuria District Acowa Sub County North – Eastern Uganda by Community Integrated Development Initiatives (CIDI) and it will run for a period of one year. The total budget of the project is 89,286,000 (Eighty nine million, two hundred eighty six thousand).

The project is aimed at directly benefitting 30,000 marginalized rural poor in the sub county of Acowa in Amuria District of which 50% are women, 15% men and 35% school children. The sub county faces a lot of constraints in the WASH sector and the demand for safe water coverage as of water for production is too high. This is in addition to poor management of WASH facilities by the communities. The project will have a multiplier effect thus benefiting over 60,000 indirect beneficiaries through approaches like media mainly radio and the various publications that will be produced.

The overall objective of the project is to contribute to equitable access to safe water in Acowa Sub County by 60% and improved sanitary conditions by 35%. With specific objectives of; promoting and creating awareness and understanding of WASH situation in ACOWA, capacity enhancement of Communities and CIDI staff on WASH issues to better understand sector policies, rights and financial regimes and establishing of channels and structures through which the voices of the people can be amplified and be able to engage government and service providers.

The project is employing the methodology of; rooted advocacy which empowers communities to carry out advocacy by them selves, participatory planning, monitoring and evaluation, Community mapping, dialogues and formation of community based monitors and evaluators.

 The activities to be implemented under this project comprise of; Inception/consultative meetings , enumeration exercise, Water Quality Testing and Analysis, production of a Citizen’s Report Card and dissemination of findings, Capacity Building training sessions for the CBME’s ,Development of IEC materials, Generation of WASH advocacy issues ,Dialogues at various levels, Radio programs and  Participation in national WASH related events.

At the conclusion of this project, awareness and understanding of WASH situation shall be created amongst the people of Acowa Sub – County, capacity of CIDI staffs and the communities shall be built in the areas of sector policies, rights and financial regimes as well as established channels/forums of amplifying voices of the marginalized and facilitating continued stakeholder engagement.
